In the afternoon of September 15, Chen Yuanyuan, head nurse, invited some patients' family members to participate in the health and safety education seminar of the department. For hemiplegic patients, who are commonly seen in the Department of Neurosurgery, Liu Wenbo, a nurse, explained the knowledge of “good limb placement”, demonstrated the limb placement of hemiplegic patients in the lying position, lateral position and sitting position, and emphasised the importance of good limb placement for the rehabilitation of patients. She also emphasised the importance of good limb positioning for patients‘ recovery and encouraged family members to participate in patients’ care. For the safety of patients, nurse Ma Qiuyun gave a lecture on ward management, including the safe use of beds and instruments, the significance of the warning signs on bedside tablets and the safe use of electricity, etc. She cited safety warning cases, such as the case of a fall caused by a bed handle that had not been returned to its original position, a fire caused by cigarettes, and the case of a patient falling out of bed without bed stalls, etc., which raised the safety awareness of patients and their families.
Considering that most of the neurosurgical patients are elderly, affected by diseases, cultural differences and inability to use smart phones, purely verbal education and group lectures may not achieve the desired effect. In order to make all patients and their families familiar with health and safety knowledge, nurses went into the wards to carry out health and safety education according to the different conditions of the patients.
For patients who need to be bedridden, the nurse in charge of bedside guidance to patients and their families to prevent lower limb venous thrombosis health education, the use of Teach-back health education method, the nurse demonstrates each step of the ankle pump exercise and the main points of attention, and then by the patients and their families on the content of the teaching feedback, for the deficiencies of the demonstration of the teaching again, to strengthen the interaction between the patient and the patient and to improve the quality of the teaching at the same time.
Patients with oxygen inhalation are educated on the safe use of oxygen, including the prohibition of smoking in the ward, the prohibition of flammable products around, the safe use of electricity, the inability to arbitrarily adjust the oxygen flow rate and other related content, and the adjustment of oxygen tubing tightness and loosening to improve the comfort of the patients.
Responsible nurses explained to family members how to use the warm screen, how to enquire about cost details, satisfaction survey, safety education, disease prevention education, etc., and made full use of the advantages of the warm screen, which has vivid content and can be viewed at any time and many times, to promote the patients‘ and family members’ mastery of more knowledge about health and safety.
Through this series of activities, the awareness of patients and their families to participate in patient safety
together has been improved, as well as the quality of health education, which has been affirmed and
supported by patients and their families. In the future nursing work, the second ward of neurosurgery will
continue to carry out the theme of this patient safety day, take the protection of patient safety as an
important content of medical and nursing management, and vigorously promote the patient safety
management work, and continuously improve the level of patient safety management in medical
institutions.
