The 35th National Dental Day will be held on 20 September 2023, with the theme of this year's event being "Oral Health, Total Health" and the sub-theme being "Caring for the Elderly and Enjoying a Healthy Life". The sub-theme is "Caring for the Elderly Oral Health and Enjoying a Healthy Life". Oral health is an important part of the whole body health, in order to implement the guidelines and policies of the National Health Commission, to help improve the oral health literacy of the general public, and to promote the formation of good oral health behaviours, the Medical Department of the Second People's Hospital of Liaocheng City, in conjunction with the Department of Stomatology, organized a series of activities to promote the popularity of the Dental Day.

During the Dental Day, our dental staff went into Nayan Kindergarten, Donghong Kindergarten and Shaw Primary School North Campus to bring a children's oral health popularisation seminar to the children. Dr Ma Shuyan, attending dentist, took children's songs as the starting point and led everyone into the sea of knowledge about tooth care. During the lecture, he explained in detail the methods and requirements of caring for teeth from the shape and structure of teeth, what is dental caries, the harm of dental caries and the correct way of brushing teeth, etc. He suggested that children should have an oral health checkup at least once a year for the early prevention, early detection and early treatment of oral diseases. In the course of the lecture, the lecture also adopted a question-and-answer style and the children interacted with each other, and the children actively raised their hands to answer the questions, and the knowledge of caring for and protecting their teeth grew in the interaction with the dentist.

On 20 September, medical and nursing staff from the stomatology department of Huamei Hospital went into Xinhua Qiancheng Runfu, and carried out educational and voluntary activities with the theme of ‘caring for the oral cavity of the elderly’ for the elderly in the area. ‘The most common oral problems among the elderly are dental defects and missing teeth caused by caries and periodontal disease.’ Stomatology chief physician Liu Wenjun said, in addition to the residual roots and crowns in the oral cavity, poor denture repair and bad habits will also promote the occurrence of oral mucosal disease and oral cancer, long-term chewing and abrasion will also cause the vertical distance to become shorter, thus affecting the function of the temporomandibular joints, but also cause or aggravate heart disease, gastrointestinal diseases, diabetes, cardiovascular disease and joint diseases and complications, and in serious cases, can be detrimental to the overall body Health. During the on-site oral clinic, Zhang Min, attending dentist of the Department of Stomatology, found that the elderly people generally have serious missing teeth, and called on the elderly to raise awareness of oral health care, in order to retain more functional teeth, and maintain a normal oral function status.

On 21st September, stomatology medical staff went into Bajiao Road Centre Home for the Elderly to carry out oral health education for the elderly in the home. Jing Fengying, head nurse of the stomatology department, reminded the elderly present that in addition to replacing their toothbrushes on a regular basis, they could also observe whether their teeth were uncomfortable, and that they should seek medical treatment in time if discomfort occurs for a long period of time. As the prevalence of oral diseases among the elderly is high and their self-repairing ability is weak, the elderly need to undergo oral health checkups at least once a year.

This activity combines the ‘National Dental Day’, ‘Three Reductions, Three Health’ Healthy Lifestyle Promotion Month, ‘Alzheimer's Prevention and Treatment Day’ and other health promotion themes. Next, Liaocheng Second People's Hospital will go into more schools, communities and elderly care institutions to widely publicise the benefits and methods of scientific tooth brushing, advocate ‘morning and evening tooth brushing’ and other healthy behavioural habits, and actively guide children, middle-aged and elderly people to undergo regular oral health checkups to improve the oral health awareness and health literacy level of the masses.
